This assignment is going to take many hours of work beyond class time.
A good assignment starts with a good prop.
I have been trying to instill that idea on all of you since the first day.
There is no reason to have a pop tart box in your midterm assignment or an olive oil bottle unless you are making a statement about nutrition or genetically modified ingredients in foods.
There are two components to your assignment this time, narrative and technical skills.
Narrative relates to your critical thinking skills and technical relates to your ability to define form through value.
You need to find a lighting condition that can let you express form. Adding a lamp or directional light will help you create a dramatic effect.
You will be using graphite pencils that range in value from HB to B8 .
Using a pencil requires that you use the side on the lead and not the point.
You do not want to scratch the paper , you want to render soft values that are blended as you work.
Smudging the paper is not a solution to developing values.
Value is developed by using various pencil grades.
HB is middle tone.
B1 is lighter than B4 but darker than HB.
I suggest you do some value charts with your pencils on your sketchbook .
Get in the habit of testing your values as you work.
Another tip that I can share, is that you use a tissue paper so that you do not smudge and stain the paper as you work.
This assignment will be graded at 30% of your overall class grade.
It is important that you treat the execution with outmost care.
I included below an A grade assignment from a previous student for you to consider as you begin your assignment.
Beginning today through November 16 at 5 pm, you are working on your own during class time and homework time to complete the Midterm assignment.
You will be using the following class times:
Tuesday 11/2 Thursday 11/4 Tuesday 11/9 Thursday 11/11

And Homework time beginning this afternoon.
The work by Lorena below took 40 hours to get to that stage of development. You can not work on this assignment for 40 hours at a time. It will require a slow and methodic engagement of many days and weeks to complete this.

1) Unless you are a shoemaker you should not include shoes in your drawing.
2) You should not include objects that are larger than the rest of your objects (footballs, basquetballs, guitars, golf bag).
3) Your Still Life needs to be in a proper pedestal , table or platform with a backwall and proper lighting source.
4) I will include a video above of how to make a shadow box to improve your lighting and your imagery.
This is a tool used by artist to create an atmosphere and lighting ambience for drama.
The shadow box can not be included in your drawing is just a tool to help you see shadows and value contrasts.
5) You cannot use charcoal pencils only Graphite Pencils.
6) Your objects cannot float so you must include reference to the horizon line , that is were your platform and the wall meet.
7) There are other students in this class, reach out to them. Feel free to seek peer support from each other back and forth. Share suggestions and photos and process of your work .

I stared at her, a dangerous glint in my eye and raised an eyebrow. "Excuse me?" I asked, putting my hands on my hips. "Well I mean look at her, she could pass as a football" Audrey laughed. I hissed at her and laughed sarcastically. "So could you as soon as my foot makes contact with your face!" I said, coldly, glaring at her as I heard Ky chuckle under her breath. Satisfied with my comment I smirked at Audrey. "Listen, I'm just trying to put this little shit in her place" Audrey said, trying to sound intimidating but I could still see the fear behind her eyes.
I growled at her and cracked my knuckles. "Do you know what your doing?" I asked in a sweet tone, my British accent rolling off of my tongue with elegance. "No, tell me!" She said, standing on her tip toes as I was the slightest bit taller than her. "Your insulting my friend and do you know what happens to people who insult my friend?" I asked, smiling sweetly at her. "What?" She smirked. I laughed at her before swinging a punch at her nose. "OW!" She cried, stumbling backwards, clutching her bloody nose. "You are such a bitch Emma!" Audrey squealed. "Suck my dick!" I called after her, earning a high five from Ky.

I sat down in a chair, sitting across from FG and crossed my legs, putting them on the table. FG gave me a disappointed look and shook her head before using a ruler to push my feet off of the table. "Emma, you know our rule" She began, holding her hands in front of her. I grinned at her and stayed silent. "No physical violence on the school premises!" She said. "FG, she was bullying my friend, I couldn't just sit there and watch!" I said. "But you could have gotten one of our staff members" she said.
"OH, WHAT THE FUCK WOULD THEY HAVE DONE?!" I began raising my voice as I stood up out of my chair. "Emma.." she said, calmly. "What?" I asked like a little kid who didn't get what they wanted. "I'm transferring you to the VK class" she said, shuffling with some papers. I rolled my eyes and stood up again. "Where are you going?" She asked, giving me a confused look. "To the VK class..." I said, pointing to the door, thinking that it was fairly obvious.
"I need to send an email to the teacher working there first" she said, typing something into her keyboard. I groaned and slumped back into the chair. "This is the exact attitude that got you transferred in the first place" she said, looking me in the eye. "And I give a fuck because..." I asked, causing her to gasp. "And they language needs to stop" she said, shaking her head. I laughed under my breath and fiddled with my thumbs, waiting for her to be finished.
Time Skip
FG dragged me towards the VK class and knocked on the door. A middle aged women answered and came into the hallway, shutting the door behind us. "Hello Fairy Godmother" the women exclaimed before looking at me. "I'm Mrs Brown! And this must be..." she said, completely forgetting my name. "Squarepants, SpongeBob Squarepants" I said, shaking her hand politely. FG slapped my arm playfully and told her my real name. "This is Ema Porter" she said, putting her hands on my shoulders before I shoved her away. "Well at least my class will like you" Mrs Brown said as she opened the door, letting FG and I in.
There were 7 kids inside. 4 boys and 3 girls. One of the boys was sitting in the teachers chair, drawing a penis on the board as his boots were crossed on top of the teacher's desk. He had brown messy hair, ocean blue eyes, a red sleeveless jacket on and eyeliner smudged across his eyes, he was very attractive "HAROLD!" The teacher yelled, anger clear in her voice. The attractive boy immediately turned his head, glaring at her, evil and hatred spearing in his eyes. "What did ye jus' call meh?" He asked, a thick scottish accent, lacing with every word.
"Right yes, Harry, now please take a seat" she trembled as FG watched in horror. Harry smirked and made his way to a desk next to a boy with blonde hair and a bandana and a girl with light teal hair. They laughed with him for a few moments before turning there attention to me. "Who's the new kid?" A girl with purple hair asked. "Well, would you like to introduce yourself?" FG asked me. "Nope" I said and sat down in a desk in front of me. The whole class laughed as FG left the room.
"This is Emma" Mrs Brown said. "She has been transferred to this class as she is... unable to learn in with the AKs" she said, trying to find the right words. I scoffed at her as I twiddled my thumbs on my desk. "Well let's get started" she finished, giving Harry an angry look as she wiped his drawing off of the board making him laugh. "No fun are ye?" He taunted.
All through the class I could see Harry shooting me flirty looks, causing me to blush. I wasn't gonna lie, he was very attractive and we got along quite well. I learned everyone's names by the end of the class and we had arranged to meet up after school. Once the bell rang, signalling that school was over, I walked out the door, only to be stopped by a muscular arm. "Where ye going love?" Harry asked, smirking at me. "What's it to you?" I asked, showing that it wasn't going to be easy to get me.
He laughed silently and bent down to my level so we were the same height as he was much taller than me. "Y'know ye caught me attention in class today" he said, looking me up and down. "I did? I barely noticed" I said, smiling 'sweetly'. He let out a chuckle and checked to see if anyone was looking. "I mean, yer damn fine" he whispered seductively in my ear. I blushed slightly before returning to my rebellious posture. I tilted my head and grabbed him by the ear.
"You don't wanna fuck with me, Hook" I said, smirking at him. "Oh trust me, I really do" he smirked before winking making me chuckle slightly. "Okay, tonight, 8:00 at Moonlight Pond" I said, slipping a note into his hand which had my phone number on it. "Don't be late!" I said, flipping my hair to the side, before walking out of the classroom. I could feel his eyes locked onto my ass as I left the room, sashaying down the hall.

Animal Crossing Fish - Explained #4

Deep sea fish are cool as hell. Even though I work as a marine biologist, there are just some fish I'm never going to see. Where I live and go out to sea just isn't deep enough to reach these animals that live in perpetual darkness miles and miles away from land. Animal Crossing does it's best to include deep sea oddities despite the fact that you fish from the beach. We already went over the Barreleye. Today we'll talk about the Football fish.
As said, AC:NH takes some creative liberties in including deep sea fish. In reality, you would never see one of these fish near the shore unless they were dead and washed up somehow. Otherwise, they live very deep down - the football fish in general lives at depths of 1000 meters (+3000 feet) in a section of the ocean called the "mesopelagic", also called the "twilight zone", in which only 1% of light from the surface penetrates. The temperature at this level is only about 4 degrees C (39 degrees F). So, it makes sense that a lot of the deep sea fish in AC:NH are only available at night and/or in the winter. The football fish is just one weirdo living this deep (it's surprisingly a very lively habitat!), but I think because of films like Finding Nemo, it and other anglerfish in Order Lophiiformes have become poster children for THE DEEP.
The football fish in AC:NH seems to simply represent football fish in general, for which there are a few species.
They're all these round, flabby fish with huge mouths and a lure (officially called an illicium) of which glows to draw in prey. The glow comes from symbiotic bacteria living at the tip of the illicium called the esca. Because they are so flabby, it's thought that they are "sit-and-wait" predators, employing that glowing lure. But, uh, this is just the description of the females in this group. In AC:NH, you are only catching females, although I'm pretty certain that when you catch the Football fish, you are actually catching two - it's hard to see, but I'm fairly certain the male is attached right there on her underside.
See, in the deep, deep dark, it's hard to find a girlfriend. Like, literally. So, males of the Football fish are built for only one thing once they mature - to find a girl. Males don't have teeth and they don't have lures and they are really, REALLY small. The only thing big about them are their olfactory bulbs that allow them to sniff out the pheromones of a potential mate. Once they find her, they permanently attach to her, becoming little more than a pair of gonads for her to use whenever it's time. Sometimes females will have multiple parasitic males joining her forever in the abyss. How romantic! And AC:NH does it once again with the detail.
I had CJ the Beaver make me a model of the football fish, and not only is it of course a great model of the female...but look! The male is there, too!
