Upgrade a Screwdriver : 6 Steps (with Pictures) - dotsonposelver
Introduction: Kick upstairs a Screwdriver
A few years ago I decided that I needed a screwdriver I could change the tips of and that has a minute handle. I couldn't find indefinite that I liked, sol I decided to get my own. It's worked great for me, so I definite to make an instructable how to do it. You honorable need a handle that you like and a snatch tip bearer. And of course the proper tools. (See the stairs on video here: https://youtu.be/gQqWGmcMdX4)
You could use a magnetic driveway guide, Beaver State a rhythmic attractive force bit tip holder. Or truly just about any other type of tip that you want to use.
I'm going to show how to make one similar to the one I already made, and also one for a stubby screwdriver. Before start, you need to decide how deep you want the bit tumble holder adorned. For the stubby screwdriver I wishing it to go deeper that the other screwdriver, so I'm checking to see how deep I need to practice for that. Same for the separate screwdriver. I can acquire tips to defecate them the length I need.
Tools Needed:
- Pliers
- Vise (nonobligatory, merely recommended)
- Candle (or Torch)
- Drill
- 1/4 inch Drill Bit
- 5/16 column inch Practice Bit
- 3/8 inch Practise Bit
- 7/16 edge in Drill Snatch
Parts Needful:
- Screwdriver Handle
- Magnetic Tip Bit Holder
- Strong Glue
Step 1: Remove the Existing Screwdriver Blade
We need to bulge by removing the present screwdriver blade. If your screwdriver has a loose brand information technology will be easier, but these are new and so I take to heating system them up then pull them out. Try using a candle first and see how it goes. It could take a couple minutes to heat the blade enough to tease apart information technology from the plastic. When you think IT might be hot enough, seize the blade with your pliers and try twisting it Beaver State pulling it out.
If you can't get the screwdriver blade passionate enough with the candela, try using a torch to hot up IT up. Commend to be careful with the vane erst you remove it, information technology testament be hot. The initial time I did this I burned myself connected the removed blade.
Step 2: Practice session Into the Handle (Favorite Way)
Now that you have the blade prohibited, you need to practise a 1/4 inch hole in it where you took the brand out. If you have a vise or something to hold the handle in, utilisation it. I put on't happen to have one though.
Hold the bit holder next to the drill number to go through how deep the fleck needs to go in. If you have some mag tape, put some on the Mandrillus leucophaeus bit at that depth. Following, drill into the do by to the astuteness that you need to get going. If you put on't take a vise to hold the handle in, be careful and recitation slowly. The drill bit is going to grab into the impressionable and try to rip the handle out of your hand.
Even though the bit holder has a 1/4 inch drive shaft, it North Korean won't fit into a 1/4 edge hole. Use a 5/16 column inch flake to create the hole a little bigger. As you can see in the picture, now it fits nigh perfectly. It is a soft unleash, but once we glue information technology in IT will be watertight.
Abuse 3: Drill Into the Handle (Backup Plan)
If you have a 1/4 inch drill bit but not a 5/16 inch i, another way to make the hole a trifle larger is to bore it out with the drive shaft of the bit tip holder. Put the moment bearer into the drill rearward and use the 1/4 column inch drive shaft to bore out the hole. This works by melting a little bit of plastic, so you need to apply a little of pressure to get onto to go.
Information technology's not the best way to get along this, but it gets the business done. It as wel doesn't moral proscribed the hole as well as the drill bit does, so if you need to clean it out you can use the 1/4 inch drill bit to do that. This is where I remembered that I wanted the stubby screwdriver to go in deeper. Not clear done the handgrip, just to the hole that's already loss through obliquely.
Step 4: Going a Little Bigger for the Little Handle
The thicker part of the snatch bearer doesn't amount around try-on the 1/4 edge hole I just drilled, so I grabbed a 3/8 inch drill bit and made it a little bigger. Like before, I see how cryptical I need the bite to go before I start drilling again.
It static doesn't fit close enough, and then I grabbed a 7/16 inch bit and drilled it a trifle bigger. Now I put the bit bearer into the drill and try over again. This time I can father IT to go in. Just all that excess drilling plugged the end of the hole I drilled earlier, so I had to practice session it out once again.
I put through the bit holder into the practice session back to put under it into the handle. This is just a try fit, and since it's a tight fit I have to spin information technology with the drill to puzzle over it in. It looks good, so now all I have to do is glue the bit holder into the handle.
Pace 5: Gluing IT All Together
If you have a good glue that holds unattackable to plastic, or a good 2-part bondable, that's what you want to use.
Put up some of the glue on the shaft and some into the cover. Then insert the bit holder into the cover, spinning or twisting the morsel holder as you do. This will help bed cover the glue where it's needed.
You'll probably let many of the glue agitate out, so have whatever paper towels handy to clean it up. Sometimes a bit pressure bequeath physique rising as you push the bit holder into the wield. If the bit holder starts to push itself prohibited when you release, you English hawthorn need to tapeline the bit holder in place until the glue sets.
Step 6: And That's Information technology!
The finally footstep is to permit the glue set completely in front you try using your new screwdriver.
